Popularity Of New Methods Of Addiction Treatment In Illinois

An estimated eighty thousand people and more check into various centers for addiction treatment in Illinois each year. These admissions include people who are looking at treatment for their drug and alcohol abuse problems.

Heroin, cocaine, marijuana and the relatively new methamphetamine are some of the drugs that are putting great pressure on the substance abuse authorities within the state due to the high frequency with which these drugs are reported within the state. At the same time, the treatment centers are evolving newer and newer options to curb this problem.

Since such a high number of people report for addiction treatment in Illinois, it is quite certain that there will be need for diversity in the treatment program. The conditions of all people who check in for substance abuse treatment cannot be the same. There are various factors to consider such as the age of the person who is undergoing the treatment, the kind of substance that the person is addicted to, the period since when the person is with the dependency, the state of health of the person, the mental state of the person, etc. Based on these factors, different kinds of treatment need to be implemented.

Chicago is the buzz of addiction treatment activity within the state. The city has launched several new programs for addiction treatment in the last few years. This has mostly been in answer to the ever-changing needs of the people who are brought in for this kind of remediation.

Some of the newly introduced methods of addiction treatment in Illinois are the dual diagnosis program and the day treatment program. Both of these are modifications of existing programs, introduced mainly to better fit the needs of the population. Let us look at these programs in somewhat greater detail.

Dual Diagnosis Program

Mainly, the dual diagnosis treatment program attempts to answer the needs of patients who have two or more coexisting problems within them that need treatment. In the case of addiction treatment, one of these problems is the chemical dependency itself while the other problem may be a physical or mental problem that interferes with the progress of the treatment.

The dual diagnosis program is so organized that it can handle both treatments simultaneously, because complete recovery of the person will be dependent on how effectively a simultaneous pattern of treatment is implemented.

When a person is brought in for such a recovery program, the first step is to put the person through a complete detoxification program. This becomes a necessity because the person needs to be first freed from the presence of the substance within their system. This can lead to health complications if proper treatment methods are not used. Also, treatment becomes faster once the person is biologically cleansed of the substance of addiction.

However, in light of the coexisting condition, it is not easy to implement this program. It may take longer and require different medicinal approaches to detoxify a patient who has a secondary condition affecting them.

Once the detox has been done, the patient is put through a treatment process for the other affliction. If it is a physical problem, a proper medicinal therapy is put into place. If the problem is mental in nature, the patient is put through counseling therapy, mostly under a psychiatrist, who would decide the right kind of recovery process for the patient.

Day Treatment Program

The day treatment program was initially considered to be a mild form of addiction treatment, but with the possibility of serious kinds of chemical dependencies such as heroin addiction being treated through this program, its relevance has increased. Two drugs that have been approved by the FDA recently, Suboxone and Subutex, are introduced into the heroin treatment program in Illinois.

These drugs contain buprenorphine, a better alternative over the previously used methadone, which has made it possible for heroin addiction to be treated on an outpatient basis, through the day treatment program.

The day program requires patients to attend the treatment center everyday for a few hours of therapy. But unlike the previous outpatient programs, this program can tackle difficult addiction cases too. The program includes constant monitoring, which is an improvement over existing outpatient programs in Illinois. Also, the counseling methods are improved, mostly to include the family members of the patient so that they can also be counseled on what the best approach is to bring the patient out of the addiction and into a complete recovery.

These new methods of treatment are making it possible to take addiction treatment in Illinois to a wider clientele, and are definitely helping to reduce the problem within the state.
