Preventing Hypothermia And Frostbite

By: Aydan Corkern

Have you ever felt really cold or icy water on your body? It is freezing because it has been under ice and the temperature is under zero degrees. It can put you into shock and it can mess with the function in your body that makes you move and speak. It can kill you if you are in it too long or if you are in those wet clothes too long. You might not have any way of getting warm because you may not have feeling in your hand. If you fall into the water because the ice had broken, it will be hard to get out.

If you are walking on ice and slide on to the ice, make sure that you have someone there with you in case this happens, and they can get you out and get you warm. Also, make sure you get them into dry clothes and cover them with a blanket before they can get hypothermia. It feels like a thousand knives are stabbing you at once. You will be in so much pain that you will hardly be able to move. It will turn your body a blue color, and you will feel numb everywhere like you cannot feel your own body.

You have to keep moving so the cold water does not freeze up your body and kill you. Make a fire and put them next to it so their body can get warm again and keep your blood warm so it can get flowing through your body and keep you alive. If you are close to the house, then get them in there and cover them with lots of covers or get them into warm water so their body will heat up and get the color back in their skin. Their lips will be blue, their hair will have frost in it, their teeth will be shaking, and they will be shaking all over. They will be so cold that their teeth will shatter in unison with their shaking.

Get them to a doctor as fast as possible or get them to the hospital after you get them warm to see if there is any damage to their body. Problems like frostbite or nerve problems can occur. Make sure that they do not have a cold because it can get bad to the point that they need to be hospitalized.
