Relieving Back Pain with a Lower Back Stretch

By: Richard Black

When most people feel lower back pain, they tend to attribute it to a number of different things. Some people claim they slept on it incorrectly, while others may claim that they lifted heavy objects poorly and are paying for it with the added pressure.

However, the reality is that sometimes what causes is simply a failure to stretch, so that when you did sleep wrong or you did lift a heavy object, your muscles were ill equipped to deal with that kind of stress. The best way to stop the pain, then, is to perform an effective lower back stretch that is designed to help ensure that a great deal of your lower back pain is diminished.

Lower Back Stretch

If you have ever run or worked out in the past, you know how important it is to stretch. Stretching reduces injury dramatically, because it warms your muscles up and prepares them for the physical endeavors they are about to experience. It is strange, then, that so few people realize how effective lower back stretches are towards reducing the amount of back injury that occurs on a near daily basis.

In order to perform some good lower back stretches, give yourself a little bit of time every morning to complete the following well known routines (note: These are not for people with back injuries that require special stretches):

Stretch 1

Find a comfortable location and lay down flat on your back with your hands at your sides. Lift your legs up in the air and then towards your head until your toes are as close as you can get them to the floor behind you. Hold this position for about 5 to 10 seconds and then release.

Stretch 2

Turn over so that your stomach is now on the floor and lay out straight. With your hands at your side, lift your torso and head. You should be feeling it in your back, though your arms may be supporting a great deal of your weight.

If at any point in either of these stretches you experience any significant pain (often there is a tiny bit of pain that should almost feel like relief when you perform these stretches), you may already have experienced or be experiencing a serious back injury. That could be one of the reasons you are experiencing lower back pain, in which case these stretches are not going to do nearly as good as seeing a doctor.

However, if you perform these stretches with some regularity, you should be experiencing relief not only on a regular basis because of the amount of pressure your muscles can handle, but also during the stretches as for most people stretching out their lower back actually makes them feel somewhat better. In general, however, what you can best expect from regularly stretching is significantly less back pain due to things like awkward sleeping and heavy lifting, and hopefully a more ache and pain free time as you go about your daily life.
