Search Engine Optimization and Here Comes the Traffic

By: Gregg Forscher

A search engine is really a system for helping one find information in a computer. If one is looking for information lets say in an encyclopedia, it may take hours to find if one is going to find it at all. With a search engine it searches out those terms or words you are looking for and takes the information from an international pool of information. Thus you can find what you are looking in seconds.

The idea of optimizing a website for a search engine started around the middle 1990s. It was at this time that webmasters saw the advantages of high ranking of their sites.

In the beginning years webmasters could manipulate their websites so that they could obtain high ranking with the search engines whether or not the content of their web page was considered of relevance to the targeted keyword.

As time passed the search engine computations began to consider the relevance of a specific web page to a specific keyword or group of keywords. Search engines became increasingly more refined so a search engine could distinguish what web pages had relevance to a keyword being searched for and what web pages were being manipulative so as to gain traffic without relevance. This was then defeated by search engines being able to tell the quality and strength of links coming into a web page. This system however was still not foolproof as webmasters could still manipulate by exchanging, buying or selling higher quality links to their sites with others. From that point forward there were other factors entered in to computations search engines use in their rank of pages. The search engines did and do not divulge this information to webmasters and the general public.

There are professional companies that deal in search engine optimization. They optimize a website for a customer so that they can rank as high as possible in the search engines. They have to know what they are doing and how far they can go in their strategies or else they can have a negative effect on the relationship of their clients to the search engines. In the worst case scenario they can result in a website being banned. Not ideal for someone trying to promote their site. These companies need to keep abreast of what changes are occurring with search engines, but as they are not told by the search engines this is not always an easy task.
There are search engines that have tried to communicate with the search engine optimization companies so that they can be in coordination and hopefully to be to everyones advantage.

Some companies strive to be in alignment with the search engine guidelines and there are those who try to skirt these guidelines and get around the rules and regulations. Their idea is along the lines of getting as much traffic as they can until they are caught.

Along with a search engine optimization campaign, a payperclick type campaign is also a good idea. One never knows when the search engines will change their strategy and what will happen to the traffic generated by this means at that point. If this occurs one always has the paid for traffic to fall back upon. Good luck in your ventures.
