The Bass Fishing Basics For Beginners

By: Daniel Eggertsen

Bass fishing is a fairly simple hobby to enjoy for the beginning angler. There are many different ways to enjoy the hobby and be productive. There are, however, a few steps you can take to make the experience more enjoyable.

The first bit of advice I can give any beginning angler is to keep their equipment small and light. There is no reason to spend large sums of money on exquisite pieces of fancy equipment. I think the beginning angler can start with the following:

Two six foot long graphite light to medium light fishing rods. It is important that you have rods that are sensitive to feel strikes. Quite often a fish will attack your offering so lightly you will not even know it is there with a light action rod. I believe owning one light action rod and one medium/light action rod is the best way for a beginner to start.

Two high quality spinning reels. There are many models or the market that fit into this description. I am partial to Shimano reels for the beginner due to their ease of use, ability to withstand rough pressure and excellent drag system.

Perhaps the most important decision is one that is often overlooked by beginning anglers. Line selection can be critical. I see many beginning anglers use line in the twenty to thirty pound weight class. These anglers simply do not understand the concept of visibility of line and how it affects your overall performance. I think every angler should at some point take the time to do an experiment that defines just how visible each grade and weight of line really is. When you perform this experiment you will find that fluorocarbon line has the least visibility under water. I strongly advise using fluorocarbon line that is no heavier than ten pound test, lighter if you feel comfortable with it.

Perhaps the most enjoyable decision regards deciding what to stock in your tackle box. If you do not watch out it could be your most expensive decision as well. First you need some basic fishing necessities. A hook sharpener, nail clippers, scissors and pliers are musts for all fishermen. If you are going to use live bait you will also need an assortment of hooks, swivels, weights and bobbers.

For the angler who uses artificial baits you will need a wide variety of offerings to match each of the fishing situations you may encounter. Largemouth Bass lures typically fall into four categories that often are mixed. There are lure for shallow water fish, deep water fish, active fish and inactive fish.

The spinnerbait is perhaps the most versatile Largemouth Bass lure. It can be used for both active and inactive fish by varying the speed it is presented at. This lure is best used in weeds as it is semi weedless. It is a unique lure in that it is often effective as it drops to the bottom and the skirt flutters to attract a strike. It is only a shallow water lure that can be used in 75% of the situations you will encounter.
