The Tragedy Still Lingers For Victims Of Natural Disasters

By: Aydan Corkern

In recent years we have all seen the tremendous devastation that has been caused by natural disasters that no one could see coming or put a stop to. The floods, fires, and tornadoes across our country and others have taken a toll of families and their homes. In many cases their entire lives have been turned upside down and nothing is the same for them as it was before these horrible disasters struck.

The sad thing is that for many of these families, even those here in the United States, they still have not been able to make a full recovery even when it has been months since they were put out of their homes by the disaster that befell them. It does not mean that they did not receive immediate help, but that many of them were never able to return to their homes because it was either destroyed completely or it was damaged so badly and they had no money to make necessary repairs.

Of course, many homeowners had insurance that they collected to help them get back on their feet, but this is never true for all victims of natural disasters such as the Midwest floods in early 2008 or the most recent hurricanes and tornadoes. It is the families that had no insurance and no money set aside that have been affected the most. Although they probably received clothes and food from charities and perhaps even the government in the beginning, the help eventually fades away.

When you have lost your home, your belongings, and probably your job as well, it can take months or even years to recover from these kinds of things. The children in these families that have to move to new places where they might have relatives or friends to stay with temporarily will have to be uprooted, change schools, and make new friends. The lasting affects of the tragedy can stay with them long after the disaster.

Even months after they have had to flee their homes, so many of these folks still need some help. Perhaps they are still looking for a new job or places to live that they can afford. It is difficult enough to lose your home and way of life anytime, but with the economy and job situation being what it is, it will probably take even longer for these families to ever get back to where they were. It is through the compassion and caring of others that have helped then thus far.
