Treading Water Could Save Your Life

By: Aydan Corkern

Parts of the summer Olympics in Beijing, China this year were spectacular. Even if you do not particularly like the swimming portion, it was almost impossible to not be at least somewhat interested by the performance that was given by Michael Phelps. He was the swimming dynamo of the 2008 Olympics. He won a total of eight medals and six of them were gold. It is evident that he is a really fast swimmer, but it might make you wonder how long he could swim if he was faced with surviving in the ocean.

The majority of us do know how to swim, but that does not mean we are spectacular at it. We can go out in the summer time and go boating and swimming at the lake or on a beach and be efficient enough at swimming to enjoy ourselves without drowning, but what if we had to survive in some deep water for a long period of time while we waited for someone to come and rescue us?

This is a question that some people involved in a boating accident or who were swept out to sea by the oceans tides or currents have actually had to find out and not just wonder about themselves. Just recently a man and his autistic son were swept eight miles out to sea when the father was attempting to rescue the son. They had to tread water over night while they waited for the Coast Guard to show up and get them to safety. They had no life preservers and it must have been a very scary and tiring ordeal to say the least.

Do you think you could survive for this length of time or longer if you were placed in a situation like this? The reason that many people end up drowning so quickly in a circumstance like this is simply because they panic. It actually does not require that much strength to float and tread water if you remain somewhat relaxed and do not use up all of your energy thrashing around.

If you and your family are always going out swimming or boating, it is important that you make sure that not only are you strong swimmers, but that you know how to survive if you are ever faced with a situation where you have no choice but to stay afloat. Swimming instructors can show you how to do this more efficiently and it just might save your life in a water related crisis.
