Wash Your Hands Thoroughly To Kill Germs And Bacteria

Anyone who does a lot of cooking for their family whether it is mom or dad knows that it is vitally important to keep things in the kitchen as clean as you can. Over the past several years we have all learned how easy it is to spread germs and harmful bacteria like salmonella from one place to another and from one food to another. In the kitchen when food is being prepared is where a lot of stomach viruses can be spread to family members.

Raw chicken is one of the most notorious foods to have salmonella and it spreads more stomach viruses than we can count each year. Chicken must be handled properly in the raw state because anything it touches can become contaminated. A countertop, the sink, dishes, and most of all the hands of the preparer can have the bacteria on them. Anything the preparer touches without first scrubbing their hands with soap and water, preferably anti bacterial soap and hot water, will be contaminated.

People that try to be clean will usually rinse their hands quickly or even those who try harder will dab on a little soap and wash them under running water for a few seconds. This is still not good enough to kill bacteria. You need to wash your hands for at least twenty seconds according to the standards that restaurant inspectors use. Anytime you handle raw foods and especially meats you should observe this ritual for your health and that of your family.

Washing your hands as important as it is should not be the only things you wash as you cook and clean in your kitchen. Anywhere the foods touch need to be wiped with disinfectant wipes or sprays to kill any germs and bacteria there. Do not use the same fork to spear a vegetable after you have used it to pick up a piece of raw chicken or other meat. This will also spread the bacteria.

Although we can never protect our family from contamination by germs and bacteria, good old fashioned hot water and soap of some kind will go a long way in keeping their numbers down. It is good to teach our kids these rules about cleanliness while cooking and cross contamination of bacteria so they will know how to keep their selves as healthy as they can when they leave your home to run their own house. Good habits of all kinds can be transferred from parents to children and the ones that involve their health are the really important ones.
