Web Site Design 101

By: Phoenix Delray

Web site design is the creation and layout of web pages that inclusively make up a web site. The web site, of course, is a collection of information about a certain topic or subject. Web site design can somewhat be compared to writing a book, in that each page of a web site is like a page in a book. There are many things that must run smoothly together to have a successful web site design.

Web site design has many parts to the process, and new aspects are emerging in web site design constantly. The basic aspects of web site design are content, appearance, visibility, and usability. Content of a web site design is the information that is on the site that targets the audience that the information is concerned with. The appearance of a web site design is the graphics and text that mesh together to look professional and appealing to the audience.

Visibility of a web site design is very important; the web site has to be easy to find on search engines, or no one will visit the web site. The usability of a web site design should be user friendly with simple navigation.

The home page of a web site design is the first page of the web site. Some sites use something called a splash page, which includes a welcome message or disclaimer of some sort. Each web page in the web site design is an HTML file with its own URL. When each page of a web site is created, they are linked together using hyperlinks. Once a web site design is completed it has to be submitted or published in order to be seen by the public on the Internet. This can be done using an FTP client. Once the web site design is published, the web master can increase the hits that the web site receives. In order to get more traffic and higher positions on search engine result pages, a web site design should submit the web site to a search engine and create affiliations and links with other web sites.

A web site design is a system of information with different pieces, and those pieces are known as front end and back end. The viewable content, like the graphics, text, and audio, is known as the front end. The back end of a web site design includes the components that are behind the scenes such as scripted functions, source code, and the server side components.
