Weird Water Sports You Would Enjoy Trying

By: Aydan Corkern

As long as we can remember people have used water to entertain themselves. When it is hot and sometimes even when it is cold, there is a certain attraction that water holds. Here are just some of the weird things that people use water to entertain themselves with. Some you may have heard of some you might wonder why in the world anyone would ever do.

1. River surfing is a relatively new sport that many people may not have heard of. We all know how much people like to surf on the waves of the ocean, but rivers? Evidently it can be done. It is thought that river surfing can be traced back to 1955. A regular surf board can be used. The surfers ride along on standing waves of a river or tidal bores which is surfing coastal rivers. This sport has been done at Jackson Hole, Wyoming for years, but it is done in rivers all around the world believe it or not. If you live near a river and have always wanted to try surfing, well here is your chance to try one kind of this sport if you are brave enough.

2. Many of us love to go down to some local water hole and try our hand at fishing, but we usually do it in the warm weather, but there are some who are thrilled with the sport of ice fishing. Some people who live in extremely cold climates have no choice but to fish this way, but others wait for there rivers or lakes to freeze over just so they can ice fish. Ice fishing requires that you make a hole in the ice to put your line down in. Some people actually have a little shack built on the water to use as protection from the freezing weather as they fish. It must be fun in some way, but it can also be a little risky. Before you try this particular fishing style, you should read up on safety tips and techniques that will reduce the danger.

3. Maybe you have and maybe you have not heard of polar bear swimming. This is not the big white bears of the North Pole. These are various groups of people who like to celebrate the New Year by going for a little swim in the frigid water of some rivers or even a swimming pool. They put on their bathing suits and take a quick plunge as some sort a bizarre yearly ritual. There may or may not be given some sort of reward for being a participant, but surely some of them just end up sick. It is very questionable why anyone would want to voluntarily do this, but it is considered fun by quite a few folks who do not seem to mind be almost naked and swimming in freezing cold water.
