What Should You Have In Your First Aid Kit?

Whether you are looking to put together a first aid kit for your home or office or looking to purchase a ready-made kit, there are several must haves that should be included. You never know when you are going to need to use the first aid kit, therefore it is always best to be prepared.

You will want a variety of different bandages in the first aid kit. Be sure the kit includes different sizes of bandages as well as different types. For example, your first aid kit should have small band-aids for minor cuts and scrapes. As well, you will want larger bandages, which can be used to cover an eye or a larger cut. You will also want to include an adhesive tape that is waterproof.

Another must have is antibiotic ointment. By simply apply some antibiotic ointment to a cut, you can prevent an infection from setting in. Although some bandages come equipped with the ointment, it is important that you have a separate tube in the first aid kit.

You will also want to make sure your first aid kit includes some type of antiseptic wipes. If you are creating your own kit, then you can purchase wipes that are individually wrapped. These are great for cleaning out a minor cut.

No kit would be complete without a thermometer. This is important so that if you become sick, you can have an accurate assessment of your temperature. If your temperature is high enough, you will need to seek immediate medical attention.

Some type of cold compress is essential for your first aid kit. Ice packs can be purchased that stay warm until you need them. With this type of ice pack, you simply snap the pack and it immediately begins to turn cold.

Protective items such as latex gloves and mouth barriers are essential. Should you need to give someone CPR, you will have some type of protection. This is especially important if you are performing first aid on a complete stranger. It is essential that while helping someone else out, you do not put yourself in danger.

Your first aid kit should also include some over the counter medications, such as aspirin and ibuprofen. You can also include medications such as bug bite spray, calamine lotion or other anti-itch cream or spray.

Scissors and tweezers should also be included in a first aid kit. These will come in handy in a variety of different instances. For example, the scissors can be used to apply the tape and bandages. As well, should the need arise, you can use the scissors to cut a piece of clothing.

Tweezers can be used to remove objects that could become embedded in the skin.

If you purchase a first aid kit, you can always customize the kit to fit your personal needs. It is important to have a first aid kit readily available, should the unexpected arise.
