Will Our New President Be Able To Calm The Choppy Waters Of Racism In The U.S.?

By: Aydan Corkern

For many people that are of an older generation have unfortunately been able to witness first hand what racism can do to even a great country like ours. We usually associate racism to the black citizens of our nation, but sadly enough there is enough of it to go around to all minority groups. Racism has been rectified in many ways over the past fifty years, but people are blind that can not see that there is still a long way to go.

Until the last of the truly racist people have finally died out and gone on to whatever their eternal reward might be, there will always be problems to be faced. While the majority of racists are white people that have usually been raised from the beginning in a certain prejudiced way, there is racism among Blacks, Asians, Hispanics, and Native Americans as well. There is still prejudice towards Jewish and Muslim religions by other different skin colors of Americans.

Sometimes it makes you wonder what it would really take for all Americans to put aside their racist views and come together as one people. It is believed however, that this presidential election is going to go a long way towards healing this nation of racist views and destructive acts that are meant to keep us all divided and not just with white verses blacks. Maybe the economic crisis, two wars, failing banks, and industries will be what it takes to make us realize that we all live in America and we are all affected by what is happening.

For those sad white people who are fired up mad, of which I am one, white that is, that might have a hard time dealing with the fact that we have a new African American president, who happens to be half white, they need to grow up. They need to remember that the black population and others have contributed just as much to the development and growth of this nation as any white person has. In some ways their sacrifices in the past have been even more than ours. We were never beaten, enslaved, or had our children stolen and families separated all in the name of making the rich get richer.

This is not to say that poor white people and other races have not had their share of humiliation and degradation as well through out the years because many people that immigrated from Ireland, Poland, and some other countries suffered cruel injustices too.

All that can be done should be done to unite this country as one nation that works together, respects one another no matter whom you are or where you are from. Our children need to be raised and taught that as a country united we must stand or divided we will fall. It is right for our future and the future is now.
